CoaXPress area scan cameras for the highest data rates

CoaXPress transmits image data over coaxial cable at 6.25 Gbit/s (CXP-6) or 12.5 Gbit/s (CXP-12) per channel; four channels deliver up to 50 Gbit/s. Power (PoCXP) and trigger signals run over the same cable, and cable lengths up to 40 m are possible. The counterpart is a frame grabber that hands the data to the computer through buffer memory. VISIONTECHNIK offers CoaXPress area scan cameras from HIKROBOT and OPT with 5 to more than 150 megapixels, frame rates up to 339 frames per second and sensors from 1/2 inch to medium format, in mono, colour and NIR versions.

Where CoaXPress is the right interface

CoaXPress is the interface when resolution and frame rate together exceed what 10 GigE can carry: 25 megapixels at more than 150 frames per second, 65 megapixels at more than 70, or 150 megapixels at cycle times 10 GigE no longer allows. Deterministic transmission with trigger over the cable makes it attractive for clocked systems with many cameras and central acquisition.

Camera, frame grabber and cable have to match: the CXP level (CXP-6 or CXP-12), the number of channels and the connector type (DIN 1.0/2.3, HD-BNC). The frame grabber category lists cards with two, four and eight channels and PoCXP.

Selection criteria

The filters in this category follow the questions to settle before choosing:

  • Resolution: from 5 to more than 150 megapixels, concentrated at 12, 25, 65 and 151 megapixels
  • Frame rate: from a few to 339 frames per second at full resolution, depending on channel count and CXP level
  • Sensor size: 1/2 inch to 1.1 inch with C-mount, larger sensors up to 66.7 mm with M58 and M72
  • Pixel size: 2.5 µm to 5.5 µm
  • Mono, colour or NIR
  • Lens mount: C-mount for sensors up to 1.1 inch, M58 and M72 above, occasionally F-mount

Frequently asked questions about CoaXPress area scan cameras

What do CXP-6 and CXP-12 mean?
The data rate per channel: 6.25 Gbit/s for CXP-6, 12.5 Gbit/s for CXP-12. A CXP-12 frame grabber also runs CXP-6 cameras; the other way round, a CXP-12 camera runs on a CXP-6 grabber only at reduced rate, if the camera supports it.
Is a frame grabber mandatory?
Yes. CoaXPress is a point-to-point link to an acquisition card in the computer. The card powers the camera via PoCXP with up to 13 W per channel and handles trigger and buffering.
How long can the coaxial cable be?
With CXP-6 up to about 40 m, with CXP-12 up to about 30 m using high quality cable. The exact length depends on cable type and data rate and is stated by the manufacturer.
