HDMI cameras for on-screen display without a computer

HDMI cameras output the camera image directly to a monitor, without a computer and without software. That makes them the simplest solution for visual inspection benches, microscopy, training and documentation, where a person judges the image and no automatic evaluation is needed. Settings such as exposure, white balance and image section are made on the camera or through an on-screen menu. Where an HDMI camera is the right choice

Wherever the image is viewed but evaluated by a person rather than by software: visual inspection at manual workstations, microscope and magnifier workplaces, demonstration and training, watching a process on a monitor.

If the image is to be stored, measured or processed by software, a USB 3.0 or GigE camera is the appropriate choice. Some HDMI models additionally offer a USB port for transfer to a computer.

Selection criteria

Three questions matter most for the choice:

  • Resolution: 2, 4 or 12.4 megapixels; 2 megapixels are enough for Full HD monitors, 4K monitors make use of higher resolutions
  • Frame rate: 30 or 60 frames per second; 60 for smooth display of moving objects
  • Sensor and pixel size: 1/2 inch to 1/1.56 inch with 2 µm to 3.75 µm; they determine lens choice and light requirement
  • Lens: C-mount; for microscopes a matching adapter

Do I need a computer for an HDMI camera?
No. The camera connects directly to a monitor with an HDMI input and is powered by a power supply. Settings are made on the camera or through an on-screen menu.
Can I save images with an HDMI camera?
Only if the model has an additional USB output or a memory card slot. For storage and evaluation on a computer, a USB 3.0 or GigE camera is intended.
Which lens fits?
All models in this category have C-mount. The focal length follows from object size and distance; for microscopes there are C-mount adapters for the photo tube.
