Camera Link is the established frame grabber interface of industrial machine vision: Base with one cable up to 255 MB/s, Medium and Full with two cables up to 680 MB/s, deterministic and with trigger over the cable. New systems today mostly turn to CoaXPress or 10 GigE; Camera Link remains the right choice where frame grabber, cables and software already exist or a camera in a running system has to be replaced. Where Camera Link is the right interface

When replacing a camera in an existing system, what counts is that configuration (Base, Medium, Full, 80 bit), clock frequency and connector type (SDR or MDR) match the existing frame grabber. The software then stays unchanged and the conversion is limited to the camera.

For new systems, CoaXPress offers the higher data rate and longer cables with the same determinism; 10 GigE works without a frame grabber. Those who deploy Camera Link anew usually do so because of existing experience, software or spare parts stock.

What distinguishes Base, Medium and Full?
The number of data channels and thus the bandwidth: Base uses one cable at up to 255 MB/s, Medium and Full two cables at up to 510 and 680 MB/s respectively. Camera and frame grabber have to support the same configuration.
Does every Camera Link camera fit every Camera Link frame grabber?
Within the same configuration and clock frequency usually yes; the protocol is standardised. Points to check are connector type, cable length and whether the frame grabber is meant to power the camera via PoCL.
Are new Camera Link cameras still available?
Yes, this category lists current models with up to 101 megapixels. For new systems a comparison with CoaXPress and 10 GigE is still worthwhile, as they offer higher data rates and longer cables.
