Camera Link line scan cameras for frame grabber systems

Camera Link transmits line data deterministically to a frame grabber, with trigger and encoder signals over the same cable. For line scan cameras this is the classic route, because line synchronisation happens directly on the card and software and frame grabber already exist in many systems. VISIONTECHNIK offers Camera Link line scan cameras from HIKROBOT and OPT with 4k, 8k and 16k pixels, line rates from 10 to 200 kHz, pixel sizes of 3.5 µm and 7 µm, in mono and colour versions with M42 and M72.

Where Camera Link is the right interface

In systems with an existing Camera Link frame grabber, when replacing a camera and wherever line trigger, encoder and acquisition are to come together on one card. The configuration (Base, Medium, Full, 80 bit) determines the achievable line rate: Full with 80 bit carries 16k pixels at more than 40 kHz.

For new systems with long cable runs, 10 GigE (without a frame grabber) and CoaXPress (up to 40 m, more bandwidth) are the alternatives. The frame grabber category lists Camera Link cards with PoCL.

The filters in this category follow the questions to settle before choosing:

  • Line length: 4k, 8k or 16k pixels
  • Line rate: from 10 to 200 kHz, depending on the Camera Link configuration
  • Pixel size: 3.5 µm or 7 µm

  • Lens mount: M42 at 4k, M72 at 8k and 16k

Frequently asked questions about Camera Link line scan cameras

Which Camera Link configuration do I need?
The configuration has to carry the data rate: line length times line rate times bits per pixel. 4k at 50 kHz and 8 bit are 200 MB/s (Base), 16k at 40 kHz are 640 MB/s (Full). Camera and frame grabber have to support the same configuration.
How is the encoder connected?
To the frame grabber or to the camera, depending on the model. The control signals travel to the camera over Camera Link so that lines are captured in step with the web.
How long can the Camera Link cable be?
At full clock frequency about 7 to 10 m, at lower clock up to 15 m. For longer runs, 10 GigE or CoaXPress are intended.
