10 GigE line scan cameras for fast web material

10 GigE brings line scan cameras to line rates that used to be reserved for Camera Link or CoaXPress, over network cable up to 100 m or fibre and without a frame grabber. With 16k pixels, wide webs can be captured in one pass at high resolution; with 4k, narrow webs at very high speed. VISIONTECHNIK offers 10 GigE line scan cameras from OPT with 4k, 8k and 16k pixels, line rates from 36 to 200 kHz, pixel sizes of 3.5 µm and 7 µm, in mono and colour versions with M42 and M72.

10 GigE line scan cameras: choosing by inspection task

Where 10 GigE is the right interface

For web material running faster than 2 to 3 m/s or where 8k and 16k lines at high rate are needed: paper and film machines, printing presses, glass and panel inspection, web material in battery production. The network connection allows cables up to 100 m and far more with SFP+.

The computer needs a 10 GigE network card or a camera interface card with RJ45 or SFP+ and enough throughput for the sustained load: 16k pixels at 100 kHz are 1.6 GB/s. The frame grabber category lists matching cards.

Selection criteria

The filters in this category follow the questions to settle before choosing:

  • Line length: 4k, 8k or 16k pixels; it determines the resolution across the web
  • Line rate: from 36 to 200 kHz in stock
  • Pixel size: 3.5 µm or 7 µm
  • Mono or colour
  • Lens mount: M42 at 4k, M72 at 8k and 16k
  • Connector: RJ45 for copper or SFP+ for fibre

Typical applications

10 GigE line scan cameras are used, among other things, for:

  • Paper, film and nonwoven webs at high speed
  • Print inspection with 8k and 16k lines
  • Glass, panel and display inspection
  • Electrode webs in battery production
  • Sorting systems with wide conveyor belts

Frequently asked questions about 10 GigE line scan cameras

How much bandwidth does a 16k line scan camera need?
At 8 bit per pixel the line rate in kHz equals the data rate in MB/s times 16: 100 kHz are 1.6 GB/s. 10 GigE delivers about 1.1 GB/s; above that, a region of interest, a lower rate or CoaXPress is necessary.
Copper or fibre?
Copper (Cat 6a, RJ45) up to 100 m; fibre via SFP+ for longer runs, interference and galvanic isolation. Many models come in both versions.
Which lens covers 16k pixels?
At 3.5 µm pixels the line is 57 mm long; line scan lenses with a correspondingly large image circle and M72 or F-mount are needed. The line scan lens category lists matching models.
