2.5 GigE line scan cameras: more line rate over network cable

2.5 GigE is the intermediate step between GigE and 10 GigE: 2.5 Gbit/s over the same Cat 5e or Cat 6 cables up to 100 m, with the same GigE Vision protocol and without a frame grabber. For line scan cameras this means about 2.5 times the line rate that GigE allows at the same line length. Where 2.5 GigE is the right interface

When the web runs faster than GigE can transmit lines, but the effort of 10 GigE (network card, Cat 6a cabling) is not necessary. Many computers and switches support 2.5 Gbit/s out of the box.

The cameras also run on a 1 Gbit port, then at the line rate of GigE. This allows a system to be built with existing cabling and accelerated to 2.5 Gbit/s later.

Selection criteria

These questions matter most for the choice:

  • Line length and pixel size: 3.5 µm for high resolution across the web, 7 µm for more light per pixel
  • Line rate: from web speed and desired resolution in the direction of travel
  • Mono or colour
  • Lens mount: C-mount, matching the line length
  • Network: 2.5 Gbit capable card or switch, otherwise operation at GigE rate

Frequently asked questions about 2.5 GigE line scan cameras

Do I need new cables for 2.5 GigE?
Usually not: 2.5 Gbit/s runs over Cat 5e up to 100 m. Only 10 GigE demands Cat 6a or fibre.
Does the camera also run on an ordinary gigabit port?
Yes, at the line rate of GigE. The port negotiates the speed automatically.
Do I need a frame grabber?
No. 2.5 GigE works with GigE Vision through the network card. Cards with several 2.5 GigE ports are listed in the frame grabber category.
