GigE line scan cameras for web inspection and 360 degree checks

Line scan cameras capture a single line instead of an image and assemble it with the movement of the object into an endless image. With a GigE interface they need no frame grabber and connect over network cable up to 100 m. The bandwidth of 1 Gbit/s limits the line rate: at 4k pixels and 8 bit it is around 25 kHz, at 2k correspondingly more. Where a GigE line scan camera is the right choice

For web material at moderate speed, where line rate and resolution still fit into the GigE bandwidth: label and packaging print, films, textiles, wood, 360 degree inspection of rotating parts. The advantages are long cables, PoE and doing without a frame grabber.

The required line rate follows from web speed and the desired resolution in the direction of travel: 1 m/s at 0.1 mm per line demands 10 kHz. If the demand exceeds the GigE limit, 2.5 GigE, 10 GigE, Camera Link or CoaXPress take over.

Selection criteria

  • Line length: 2k or 4k pixels; it determines the resolution across the direction of travel
  • Line rate: from 4.7 to 160 kHz in stock, limited by bandwidth with GigE
  • Pixel size: 7 µm or 14 µm; large pixels for low light and short exposure

Frequently asked questions about GigE line scan cameras

How fast can the web run with a GigE line scan camera?
That follows from line rate and resolution per line. At 25 kHz and 0.1 mm per line it is 2.5 m/s; at 4k pixels and 8 bit this is roughly where the GigE limit is reached.
Do I need an encoder?
For a true-to-scale image, yes: the encoder on the web or turntable triggers every line so that the resolution in the direction of travel stays independent of speed fluctuations.
Which lens fits a line scan camera?
A lens whose image circle covers the whole line: at 4k with 7 µm that is 28.7 mm. The line scan lens category lists optics with M42, M72, V-mount and F-mount.
