VISIONTECHNIK

10 GigE area scan cameras for high resolutions and frame rates

10 GigE combines the reach of Ethernet with ten times the bandwidth of GigE: about 1 GB/s per camera, cable lengths up to 100 m over copper or far more over fibre (SFP+), without a frame grabber and with the same GigE Vision protocol. This makes cameras with 25, 50 or 150 megapixels usable at practical frame rates. VISIONTECHNIK offers 10 GigE area scan cameras from HIKROBOT and OPT with 5 to 152 megapixels, sensors from 2/3 inch to 30 mm × 22 mm and beyond, with M58, C-mount, F-mount and M72.

10 GigE area scan cameras: choosing by inspection task

Where 10 GigE is the right interface

10 GigE is the choice when high resolution and high frame rate come together and the camera sits more than 5 m from the computer: large format inspection of displays, circuit boards or solar cells, fast measurement of large parts, web inspection with area scan cameras.

The computer needs a 10 GigE network card or a camera interface card with RJ45 or SFP+; the frame grabber category lists cards with two and four ports. From about 300 MB/s sustained load a card with its own buffer memory pays off.

Selection criteria

The filters in this category follow the questions to settle before choosing:

  • Resolution: from 5 to 152 megapixels in stock, concentrated at 12, 25, 50 and 65 megapixels
  • Sensor size: from 2/3 inch via 1.1 inch to sensors of 30 mm × 22 mm; it determines lens and mount
  • Frame rate: from 8 to 164 frames per second at full resolution
  • Pixel size: 2.5 µm to 4.5 µm
  • Mono or colour: mono for measurement tasks and fine detail, colour for colour checks
  • Lens mount: M58 for sensors from 1.1 inch, C-mount up to 1.1 inch, F-mount and M72 for large sensors
  • Connector: RJ45 for copper, SFP+ for fibre

Typical applications

10 GigE area scan cameras are used, among other things, for:

  • Display, wafer and circuit board inspection at 25 to 150 megapixels
  • Measurement of large parts in a single image
  • Fast inspection on conveyors where GigE is too slow
  • Multi-camera systems with long cable runs and high data rate
  • Print and film inspection with area scan cameras

Frequently asked questions about 10 GigE area scan cameras

Does a 10 GigE camera also work on a 1 GigE port?
Many models negotiate the link down to 1 Gbit/s and then run at a correspondingly lower frame rate. Whether a model supports this is stated in its technical data.
RJ45 or SFP+: what is the difference?
RJ45 uses copper cable (Cat 6a) up to 100 m. SFP+ takes fibre transceivers, reaches several hundred metres, is immune to interference and isolates camera and computer galvanically.
Do I need a frame grabber?
No, a 10 GigE network card is enough. For several cameras or high sustained load, a camera interface card with several ports and buffer memory is recommended.
